Government Funds Initiative to Train Young Australians
In 2022, the Australian Labor Party (ALP) pledged an investment of $15.2 million to partner with the Y in establishing Y Careers, a program dedicated to creating a pathway for young Australians to enter and thrive in the care sector.
This funding aims to bridge the critical workforce gaps in the childcare, disability, and aged care industries by supporting training and job placements for 15,000 young people over five years.
Australia faces a national care worker shortage, and estimates suggest that the care workforce must grow by up to one million workers over the next decade to meet demand.
Currently, the training and education systems fall short in preparing young Australians for these vital careers. This shortage is especially pronounced in rural and regional areas, where youth unemployment and underemployment are often highest.
"This $15.2 million commitment will allow Y Care Careers to recruit, train, and support tens of thousands of young Australians in building purpose-driven, long-term careers in the care sector." - Tal Karp, former CEO of the Y
Introducing Y Careers
Y Careers was developed in collaboration with young people and industry partners to ensure a supportive pathway for young Australians—particularly those who are unemployed or underemployed—to build careers in the care sector.
Our market research has shown a strong interest among young people in pursuing care careers; however, many are unsure of entry points, available support, and career growth potential.
Through this program, young people will be introduced to opportunities in aged care, disability support, and childcare, with a specific focus on communities where the need for care workers is greatest. In addition to training, Y Careers will provide mentorship and ongoing support, helping young people secure meaningful roles that contribute to their communities.
Community Support and Partnerships
Research shows that older Australians, especially those who prefer aging at home, support having young people assist them with personal care, physical activity, and technology use. Feedback from aged care and childcare providers has also underscored the importance of targeted training and structured support for young people entering the care sector to help them succeed and stay in these rewarding roles.
